New Comic Book Day June 10, 2020: My Pull List And Pick Of The Week

The world is an ongoing shit show, more so than usual. Most people with a news feed won’t deny that. These past few months have brought us pandemics, protests, and gross injustices that shouldn’t require that much debate to address. It’s frustrating, if not infuriating. That’s what makes days like New Comic Book Day both precious and therapeutic.

I’m not oblivious. I’ve seen the news too. I know how awful these past couple weeks have been. It just makes me look forward to New Comic Book Day even more. It’s not just about enjoying an escape into a world of superheroes, aliens, and skin-tight outfits. Sometimes, you genuinely need it.

Reality can be harsh, but comics can remind you that there are still ideals worth championing. Those ideals, no matter how unattainable they are, inspire us to make reality better. At the very least, we can try to make it less awful. We can all do our part, but a fresh stack of comics on a Wednesday morning reminds us why it’s worth doing.

While the industry still hasn’t fully recovered, it’s in much better shape than it was a month ago. That means a bigger pull list, just when comic fans need it. To the comic shops still fighting to survive and the fine folks at Comixology, I sincerely thank you. Here is my pull list and pick of the week.

My YouTube Experience Thus Far (And Tentative Plans)

It’s been a week since I started my YouTube channel, Jack’s World. I feel inclined to provide a little insight because so far, the experience has exceeded my expectations and in a good way.

Since the beginning of this year, I’ve been looking to mix things up in terms of my creative outlet. I’ve always sought out that kind of outlet, going all the way back to high school. It’s a big part of who I am. I started this website in hopes of furthering my work as an aspiring writer. While it did help in getting a couple books published on a small scale, it didn’t lead to a whole lot more.

The more I’ve looked into it, the more it feels like the publishing world is inaccessible to someone like me. Over the past couple years, it feels like my window to break into it has closed. Finding an agent or a publisher just isn’t a viable route anymore. Even old sources like Writers Market have lost relevance.

In short, the publishing market is just so different right now and I have no idea how to navigate it. I don’t know that I have the time or energy to learn that world. I still have a bunch of unpublished manuscripts that I’d like to share one day, but I’m genuinely unsure of how to go about turning them into a tangible product.

Writing sexy short stories offered a nice outlet for a while as well, but the audience for that dried up as well. The reason I scaled back my efforts on this site earlier this year is because I felt the effort I put into it wasn’t matching what I got out of it. At the same time, I wanted to find another method for reaching an audience and building a brand.

Already, I feel like I can do that with YouTube.

On top of that, I’ve genuinely enjoyed the video-making process. I’m certainly no expert. In fact, I freely admit the quality of my work is amateur at best. I do not use professional-grade software. I use Movie Maker, a free program that came with my computer. I use a free sound editor called WavePad to edit the audio. The music is mostly royalty-free stuff provided by YouTube Studios.

My work is nowhere close to the quality that you see from experienced YouTubers or professionals, but none-the-less, I still like it. I want to learn more. I want to get better at this. I genuinely enjoy sharing my voice with the world in my own little medium.

If I can get an audience and grow it, I may even invest in better software. I have friends and family members who work in professional environments who use high-end software. They’ve already made recommendations. If I continue enjoying this YouTube process, then I’ll gladly invest.

What does this mean for this website?

What does this mean for my writing?

I honestly don’t know. My plan, at the moment, is to put more energy into making videos. That likely means less energy for this website. I don’t know what that means for my weekly comic reviews or Sexy Sunday Thoughts. It depends on how much of an audience I can find on YouTube. Only time will tell.

Until then, I encourage those who enjoy this site to keep an eye on Jack’s World. If all goes well, it will become the primary hub from which I share my work with the world.

New Video In Jack’s World: “F Is For Family: A Perfect Satire For The American Dream”

My new YouTube channel is small, but growing. Shortly after I posted my first video, I began work on my next one. This one is actually an expansion of a piece I wrote a while back on “F is for Family.” With a new season set to debut later this week, I thought the time was right to do a video on the show’s larger themes.

That means more discussion about why Frank Murphy is so angry with the world. It also means more insights into why he threatens to put people through a fucking wall. I hope it’s as awesome as it sounds. Enjoy!

Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe to my new channel or Frank Murphy will put you through a fucking wall.

Jack Fisher’s Sexy Sunday Thoughts: Secret Freak Edition

woman-desire-sex

It’s an old cliché, but it’s not entirely wrong. There are people in this world who are sweet, shy, and timid in public. In private, though, they are full-blown sex freaks. There’s a good chance you’ve encountered one in your life and not realized their freaky side. Some people just prefer to keep that side of themselves behind closed doors and there’s nothing wrong with that.

I’ve known a few people like that. I knew a girl in college who was very sweet and soft-spoken in most public settings, but once you got her in a private setting, she had the kind of dirty mouth that would make a sailor blush. When she got excited, she got extra vulgar. It really turned her on. She might not have been fun to hang out with in public, but in private she was her own party.

That girl knew how to balance it out. Some, unfortunately, aren’t quite as adept. There’s a fine line between being a freak in private and being so repressed that you just go crazy once you’re behind closed doors. That’s not healthy. That can be mentally taxing on someone and their partner.

I’m of the opinion that we all need balance. Some just prefer a broad range of balance. Being a freak in private and shy in public is just one way to go about it. As long as you have someone to be a freak with, then I say embrace it. Have fun with it. Hell, get creative with it. I hope these Sexy Sunday Thoughts inspire just that.

“A man with a small penis will always be more motivated when it comes to giving oral sex.”

“Romance is basically a means of preheating your lover’s genitals.”

“Depending on the situation, sleeping with your teacher can count as both extra credit and detention.”

“For those who love peace and quiet, afterglow can be as satisfying as an orgasm.”

“Finding your lover’s G-spot is the sexual equivalent of computer hacking.”

“Money will increase your chances of getting laid, but power skews the odds entirely.”

“People fear what they don’t understand, but are often turned on by the possibilities.”

We all have a public persona and a private persona to some extent. For some, there’s little variation. For others, it’s downright extreme. The secret freaks of this world understand that better than most. If they’re lucky, they’ll find someone as freaky as them. That’s a beautiful foundation for romance if ever there was one.

My New YouTube Channel And My First Video!

avatar05

I have an exciting announcement to make. Today, I’ve officially launched my own YouTube channel. I call it Jack’s World. It’s a new creative outlet and one I hope leads me to bigger and better things.

Now, I’ve had this idea for a while. Earlier this year, I announced that I would be scaling back my writing on this site. I’ve also scaled back on writing my sexy short stories and novels. The reasons for that are many, but it comes down largely to time, effort, and response.

I wasn’t getting much traffic from those endeavors. I’d hoped that I could build an audience that would eventually result in forging connections in the publishing world. That effort just didn’t pan out and I’m not confident that it will, especially given the current situation.

I still want to build an audience. I still want to make a living selling books, telling sexy short stories, and sharing my insights with the world. I just can’t do that with this site alone. As such, I’m going to give YouTube a try.

My new channel will be similar to this site in that it covers various topics, from comic books to current events to personal stories to angry rants. It’s my sincere hope that I find a larger audience and greater connections. Today, that journey starts.

I’ve had to teach myself some video editing along the way, but I’ve managed to make my first video. As it just so happens, it involves X-Men and superhero movies. That should shock nobody. It also involves “Dark Phoenix,” a movie that still hold a special place in my heart and always will. I hope you enjoy it.

If you have other ideas for videos or content, please share it. I’ve already got plans for the next crop of videos. Since my channel is small, I’m going to focus on many topics, hoping to eventually find my niche. As for what it means for this website, that remains to be seen. Until then, I hope everyone will join me in Jack’s World.

Improving My Sleep With The “Sleep With Me” Podcast: Using Boredom And A Soothing Voice To Fall Asleep

Staying healthy has never been more important. During a global pandemic, we all have to be more health conscious. One of the best things you can do for yourself in a crisis like this is to stay healthy. If your body, your mind, and your immune system are robust, then you have a better chance at making it and so do those around you.

Working out and eating right are plenty important. I’ve shared some of my experiences with that. However, the importance of sleep is often understated. By that, I don’t mean the kind of sleep you get when you’re lazily lofting about for 12 hours at a time. I’m referring to the kind of refreshing, restful sleep that is critical to our mind, bodies, and everything in between.

It’s a precious, but critical element of our lives. It’s also something that feels incredibly elusive, especially during stressful times like this. I know this because I’ve been an overly stressed high school student with a part-time job. I’ve been a stressed out college student who crammed for exams until three in the morning.

I think everyone, from those stressed out by work to those stressed out by kids, know the value of a good night’s sleep and what happens when you don’t get it. The problem is that, even when you’re tired, falling asleep can be difficult. There are plenty of things you can do to help that, including medication. However, I discourage the use of sleeping pills, except in rare cases for rare conditions and at the guidance of a doctor.

Most of the other sleeping tips you can do are common sense, but in the interest of helping everyone sleep a little better during this crisis, I’d like to offer a not-so-common tip. It’s not a pill, an expensive pillow, or some spiritual woo. It’s a podcast.

Specifically, it’s the Sleep With Me podcast. It’s kind of what it sounds like, depending on how dirty your mind is.

I recently discovered this after having a few restless nights. On paper, it sounds so absurd that it just has to work.

A man named Drew Ackerman basically spends an hour telling long, non-sensical, boring stories in his unique monotone voice to help lull you to sleep. These stories are so boring and mundane that you can’t help but feel drowsy halfway in. It essentially takes boredom and weaponizes it for the purpose of helping you sleep.

It’s as strange and wonderful as it sounds. It also works, as many loyal subscribers can attest. If you need any proof, here’s a sample. Just don’t listen to it while driving. You will get sleepy.

If you’re having trouble sleeping, I encourage everyone to give this podcast a try. The world is a crazy place right now. Getting a good night’s sleep can only help.

Sweet dreams, everyone. Hopefully, this helps you as much as it helps me.

“Rick And Morty” Season 4 Finale: Reaction, Thoughts, And Intrigue

For any show, the difference between a good season finale and a great season finale isn’t just how much it leaves you wanting more. It’s making you want more and feel something more than impatience for new episodes. Most shows don’t go that extra mile. They’re content to just build a little excitement for the next season.

However, “Rick and Mortyisn’t most shows. After four seasons, that’s abundantly and hilariously clear.

Recently, the show aired its season 4 finale, “Star Mort: Rickturn of the Jerri.” For a show that was delayed for so long, and subject to a lot of criticism for its fan base, it had a lot to live up to. It would’ve been easy for it to falter, given the current state of the world.

That didn’t happen, though. This remarkable, quirky, eccentric show found a way to cap off season in a profoundly satisfying way. For a show that’s raised the bar for a lot of things, from sci-fi tropes to fart jokes, that’s saying something.

The synopsis of the episode has many moving parts. It starts with an invisibility belt and the return of Beth’s clone from The ABC’s of Beth.” From there, it quickly turns into a bloody brawl between Rick, his family, and a newly formed galactic federation, courtesy of Tammy and a rebuilt Bird Person. I won’t spoil all the details. I’ll just say that there’s a lot of bloody brawls, spilled bear, and shameless promotion of wrangler jeans.

Trust me. That makes sense by Rick and Morty standards.

As a finale, it wasn’t quite as groundbreaking as “The Wedding Squanchers,” but it had a much more dramatic impact than The Rickchurian Mortydate.” It also helped that the episode built on the continuity established in previous seasons, namely “The ABC’s of Beth.” It took an open question as to whether Beth was a clone and turned it into a more complex story.

Personally, I had mixed feelings about this episode when it began. However, those feelings quickly changed as the episode unfolded. By the end, I felt like this episode and this season, as a whole, achieved something special. In the context of larger “Rick and Morty” lore, it gave new depth to the show and its characters.

More than anything else, the last few minutes of the episode furthers a trend that began at the end of Season 3. It was subtle for a while, but now it’s very overt.

Rick Sanchez is losing control over his family.

By that, I don’t mean he can’t influence them. He’s the smartest man in the multiverse. He literally has any number of methods for doing that. The issue here is that they no longer need him.

Since the show began, Rick has asserted himself as someone his family needs to some extent. Morty needs him to grow, both in terms of strength and capability. Beth needs him because she needs her father’s approval. Jerry and Summer need him, by default, since Beth and Morty need him.

Control matters to Rick. It matters a lot. If he’s not in total control of his world, then he can’t handle it. He values being able to do anything at any time with his genius. Throughout the show, he demonstrates capabilities that are almost god-like. Hell, at one point in this season, he actually fights a god.

However, he can’t do any of that to the degree he wants without maintaining control. This is perfectly demonstrated in the episode, “The Old Man and the Seat.” It’s an episode with a similar ending, in terms of tone. In that episode, Rick is left by himself, berated by other holograms of himself. He’s sad, alone, and miserable. It’s not quite as dark as the ending to “Auto Erotic Assimilation,” but it sends the same message.

Rick Sanchez is not well.

He’s broken, damaged, and flawed.

He’s a terrible father, a bad friend, and hates himself.

He’s miserable, despite being the smartest, most capable being in the universe.

He can manage all that through the connections he has with his family, on top of his copious alcohol consumption. However, as season 4 has unfolded, we see his family drifting further and further apart. It’s not that they’re pushing him away. They just make it clear that they don’t need him. To Rick, that’s even worse than being pushed away.

Whereas season 3 began with Rick having almost complete control over his family, Season 4 ends with him losing it. It raises an intriguing question.

What does Rick Sanchez do when nobody needs him anymore?

This episode even teased a distressing answer. Tammy points out that when Rick is alone, he’s not a threat to anyone other than himself. Without Morty or his family, he’s lacking and it shows in how much he gets his ass kicked. It hints that without his family, Rick Sanchez loses a part of himself that he can’t replace, even with his genius and alcohol tolerance.

It’ll be interesting to see if this trend continues in Season 5, whenever that may come. It’ll also be interesting to see how it effects other dangling plot threads, namely Evil Morty. A more broken Rick Sanchez is sure to be a more dangerous and unstable Rick Sanchez. Given how big an asshole he can be at times, it’s hard to sympathize with him. However, Star Mort: Rickturn of the Jerri” managed to make us feel for him.

I’m already looking forward to the next season.

Until then, wubba lubba dub dub!

New Comic Book Day June 3, 2020: My Pull List And Pick Of The Week

In general, I’m an optimist. When a new year begins, I approach it with the hope and desire to make it better than the previous year. After the first half of 2020, I may need to change my approach. As much an optimist I try to be, even I have my limits.

This year has sucked the biggest set of elephant balls that it’s possible to suck. I hope I don’t need to explain why. Between a pandemic that has shut entire parts of society down and major riots protesting racial injustice, this year has been a massive kick in the balls for every optimist that dared approach this year with a sense of hope.

That said, I’ve yet to abandon that hope entirely. I credit my long-time love of superhero comics as a reason for that. Beyond the marketing gimmicks and wish fulfillment, superheroes embody an ideal. They dare to envision how good we can be in a world that many are determined to destroy. I take real comfort and joy in that. It’s just part of what makes New Comic Book Day so refreshing every week.

I know the news has been awful on so many levels these past few months. I won’t say the worst is behind us, but I will encourage everyone to keep pushing through the despair. A fresh batch of comics isn’t a cure-all, but it can help lift our wounded spirits. To that end, below is my pull list and my pick of the week.

My Pull List

Action Comics #1022

2020 Force Works #3

Avengers Of The Wastelands #5

Birds of Prey #1

Catwoman #22

Detective Comics #1022

Justice League Dark #22

Revenge Of The Cosmic Ghost Rider #5

Wonder Woman #756

My Pick Of The Week
Wonder Woman #756

A true measure of someone’s honor is how they handle defeat. If internet comments sections and debates with creationists are any indication, people can get very ugly when they have no honor. With superheroes, there’s a similar dynamic. A characters heroism carries a lot more weight in defeat than it does in triumph. Those who don’t handle defeat well aren’t very heroic.

By that measure, Wonder Woman is in the uppermost percentile when it comes to honorable heroes and “Wonder Woman #756” further affirms that. Recent issues of Wonder Woman have really put her in questionable positions and these aren’t positions that she can fight her way out of. Where some heroes would’ve broken or whined, Wonder Woman’s unique capacity for honor and compassion continue to shine.

It has to against a foe like Warmaster. Writer Steve Orlando puts Wonder Woman in a difficult position. She lied to this woman. Even if it was to save her from her hateful upbringing, she lied to Paula Von Gunther. It wasn’t a small lie, either. Her entire life was a lie. Once the truth came out, she was not the least bit understanding.

Now, the same hate that Wonder Woman tried to save her from fuels her in a violent clash. Even for a warrior like her, it gets messy and artist Jesus Merino makes it especially visceral. As the fighting unfolds, one thing becomes painfully clear. The hate that Wonder Woman tried to protect Paula from has never been harsher. Now, everyone she loves is in danger.

In addition to fighting Wonder Woman, Warmaster’s plan starts to accelerate in Wonder Woman #756.” She’s not just targeting Wonder Woman. She’s joined the four Horsewomen to exact a bloody revenge on everyone she cares about. That includes both her home, Themyscira, and all her friends in the outside world.

A lot is at stake for her, but she still holds back. Even when Warmaster tries to force impossible choices on her, Wonder Woman keeps fighting. That’s what she does. That’s what makes her both a warrior and a hero. However, it’s still not enough. Paula’s hatred is stronger than Wonder Woman’s compassion in this case.

However, Orlando stops short of putting Wonder Woman in a dire position. If anything, the way she conducts herself while having to fight someone she cares about shows just how heroic she can be in these situations. At the same time, her willingness to love and connect with others proves critical in helping her rise up after the beating she took.

I don’t want to spoil too much, but the last page of Wonder Woman #756 offers the kind of uplifting catharsis that we all need right now. That’s what an honorable hero does, even after they’ve lost. They still find a way to inspire.

That’s what Wonder Woman does.

That’s what makes her Wonder Woman.

“Avatar: The Last Airbender” Is On Netflix: Go Watch It!

Every now and then, a TV show comes along that transcends its genre. From “Bojack Horseman” to “Rick and Morty,” these shows are more than just binge-worthy entertainment. They leave a real, tangible impact. You don’t always expect it, but that’s what makes it so exhilarating. The concept of the show may not seem appealing, but it still finds a way to be great beyond all expectations.

We need shows like that now. Given the current state of the world and the agonizing isolation it has incurred, those shows are more critical than we’ve ever been, if only for our mental well-being. I have my collection of shows that help keep me sane during these difficult times, but there’s one in particular that I’d like to suggest to everyone who shares that struggle.

That show is “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” It recently came out on Netflix in the United States and now is the perfect time to discover this wonderful gem of a show.

On the surface, it looks like a typical kids show. It takes place in a fanciful world full of fanciful characters wielding amazing powers. However, it would be irresponsible to call this “Avatar: The Last Airbender” a show for kids.

It’s one of the most underrated shows of its kind. It only ran for three seasons in the mid-2000s and aired on Nickelodeon, of all places, but rest assured this is no “Spongebob Squarepants.” This is a show that has action, depth, heart, and incredible voice acting. It’s a show that finds a way to be dramatic, tragic, fun, and heartfelt.

In fact, I honestly can’t think of any great feeling that this show doesn’t evoke.

It’s a show that deserved much more success than it got. Make no mistake. This show has some passionate fans and for good reason. It really is that good. Kids and adults alike can find something to enjoy. If you need further proof, just binge it over the course of a weekend. You’ll be glad you did.

A New “F is for Family Trailer” Trailer: More Plots (And Vulgarity)

It’s almost here.

The next season of “F is for Family” is almost upon us.

Let’s face it. We all feel a bit like Frank Murphy at the moment. Being stuck at home, with sports and movies being cancelled on top of it, we’ve all fought the urge to put someone through a fucking wall. These are tough times. Sometimes, we just need to go on a profane rant.

That’s where Frank Murphy comes in. He’s that angry rage beast in all of us and that’s why we love him.

A while back, the first teaser trailer hinted at how this season would revolve around Frank reuniting with his father, voiced by Jonathan “Mike Ermantrout” Banks. Like most plots in this show, it promises to inspire a whole new level of profanity from Frank Murphy.

Now, a longer and more detailed trailer has come out. In addition to Frank’s father joining the profanity-laced fun, some other plot elements are hinted at. They include, but aren’t restricted to heavy drug use, kids beating each other with hockey sticks, and graphic depictions of female genitalia.

In short, “F is for Family” is really stepping up its game and Frank is going to need to build more walls. Just watch the trailer. You might be inclined to help him build a few.

Beyond the profanity, blood, and graphic depictions of female anatomy, this season promises more than Bill Burr’s angry rants. Sue is almost ready to give birth. Bill and Kevin are building on their arcs from previous seasons. While Bill looks like he’s embracing his inner rage monster, Kevin is making new connections, which may or may not lead to more hilariously awkward moments.

The presence of Frank’s father is sure to heighten these moments. There are definitely some deep-seated issues between Frank and his dad. Some of those issues have clearly affected his relationship with his kids. It fits right into the larger themes of the show, which I’ve explored before. I look forward to seeing how this season builds on that.

While watching Frank hulk out is fun, “F is for Family” often tries mixing in some deeper elements. It has happened slowly, but each character has gained more layers as the show has progressed. The more we see, the more we understand where these characters are coming from and why they are the way they are. It’s part of what makes this show engaging, as well as entertaining.

Frank’s angry, profanity-laden rants will always be the primary draw, but there’s so much more at work in this show. That’s why I look forward to watching the whole season once it comes out on June 12th.

We should all start building more walls in anticipation.
