Absolute Batman #1: Why It Absolutely Works And Why It Matters

This is a video from my YouTube channel, Jack’s World.

DC Comics’ new Absolute Universe has arrived. An all-new, much darker DC Universe has emerged. And our first glimpse of this world unfolds in Absolute Batman #1.

It’s the most ambitious reinvention of Batman in years. And Scott Snyder really accomplishes something special with this first issue. I would go so far to argue that this is the most important Batman comic of the past 25 years and this new Absolute Batman is one of the most imposing versions of Batman we’ve ever gotten. Enjoy!

Batman The Animated Series: Batman Vs. Three Bored Billionaires

This is a video from my YouTube channel, Jack’s World.

In this video, I highlight and explore one of my favorite episodes of Batman: The Animated Series. While Batman has one of the best rogue’s gallery in all of comics, this episode had him clash with a different kind of enemy.

Like Bruce Wayne, they’re billionaires.

Unlike Bruce Wayne, they choose to be villains.

But it’s why they make such a choice that’s truly remarkable. And the nature of that choice does a lot to affirm why Batman’s story is so powerful. Enjoy!

Invincible: The Trauma of Being A Superhero

This is a video from my YouTube channel, Jack’s World.

This video is a lengthy, but in depth discussion about being a superhero and the trauma that comes with it. Few franchises or characters dare to explore it. But Invincible, both the comic and the TV show, dare to demonstrate in brutal detail just how traumatic being a hero can be.

There’s a lot to be said about the unique heroic journey of Mark Grayson, Atom Eve, and even Omni-Man. But I contend that the trauma of being a hero and doing the right thing is the connective tissue that makes this story so powerful. Enjoy!

Why Spider-Man Should NOT Be Broke

This is a video from my YouTube channel, Jack’s World.

This video explores the long-standing, but very much outdated trope of Spider-Man being broke. Like most mainstream superheroes, Spider-Man is subject to a lot of recurring tropes. Most involve his personal life.

However, I don’t think the overplayed plots about him being broke get enough attention. In addition to breaking down why this makes no sense, I also highlight a few other jobs or careers that would easily ensure Spider-Man never has to worry about money. Enjoy!

Avengers, X-Men, And Why The Difference Matters

This is a video from my YouTube channel, Jack’s World.

This video is a bit of a rant on the Avengers, the X-Men, and how they’re depicted in popular media. One is a celebrated team of heroes. The other is hated and feared, even as they try to be heroes, as well. There are many reasons for this that go beyond the general narrative. And with mutants poised to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I believe the time is right to highlight and scrutinize those differences. Enjoy!

Moments From My Trip To New York Comic Con 2023

This is a video from my YouTube channel, Jack’s World.

This video is a collection of images and footage from my annual trip to the New York Comic Con. This has become one of my favorite annual traditions. Going to New York, taking part in this convention, and meeting some of my favorite creatives just fills me with so much joy. And this year was one of the most eventful to date. There was so much to see and I didn’t get to experience everything. But it was still a lot of fun and I can’t wait to go back next years. In the meantime, enjoy these moments from my trip!

Storm And Black Panther: How NOT To Do A Superhero Romance

This is a video from my YouTube channel, Jack’s World. Superhero romances are always complicated. And while I’m a big fan of romance, there are times when those complications aren’t handled particularly well. The end result is a romance that neither works nor benefits any of the characters involved.

That’s how I feel about the way the romance between Storm and Black Panther. Their marriage in the mid-2000s was a huge event, marketed as the culmination of a romance between Marvel Comics’ most prominent black characters. But it didn’t last. It didn’t work. And with the benefit of hindsight, I believe it to be a case study in how NOT to do a superhero romance.

How The New DC Cinematic Universe Can Succeed (Or Fail)

This is another video from my YouTube channel, Jack’s World. This video is a deep dive into the past, future, and potential of the DC Cinematic Universe (a.k.a. the DCEU). Now that it’s all but official that the whole endeavor is getting revamped, I explore what the new DCEU needs to do in order to succeed and the potential pitfalls it might face. I’m genuinely rooting for DC and Warner Brothers to succeed. But they will face major challenges to become a full-fledged cinematic universe.

How Cindy Moon Won Me Over And Why Her Story Matters

This video is a brief exploration of Cindy “Silk” Moon, the second person that infamous spider bit after Peter Parker. She’s a fairly new character to the world of Spider-Man and Marvel Comics. Her journey since debuting in 2014 has been a erratic. But she won me over as her story unfolded and I think her story matters now more than it did when she debuted. Enjoy!
