Comic Book Video Reviews On My YouTube Channel

This past couple of months, I’ve experimented with making video reviews of comic books on my YouTube channel, Jack’s World. I wasn’t sure if this was going to be a regular thing, but it does seem to have found an audience. So, I wanted to share some of those reviews on this site.

Here’s my review for Jean Grey #1.

Here’s my review for Jean Grey #2.

Here is a playlist of reviews for Ultimate Invasion.

Jean Grey #1 Review: Life, Death, And Fixing Timelines

This is a video from my YouTube channel, Jack’s World.

This video is my review of Jean Grey #1, the first issue of Jean’s mini-series by Louise Simonson and Bernard Chang. This video spins directly out of the bloody events of the 2023 Hellfire Gala, which sent Jean back to the brink of death once more. Now, she finds herself in a strange state of uncertainty, contemplating where it all went wrong and how she’ll go about fixing it. Enjoy!

Phoenix Resurrection: How Marvel Brought Jean Grey Back To Life In The Best Possible Way

This is a video from my YouTube channel, Jack’s World.

This video is a retrospective, as well as a celebration, of the return of Jean Grey in the pages of Marvel Comics. It unfolded in a five-issue mini-series entitled “Phoenix Resurrection,” but the circumstances and impact of the story went far beyond simply bringing back to life a character who had been dead for years.

Jean Grey is one of my favorite comic book characters of all time. Her coming back to life was an overdue, emotional experience. And this video is my way of sharing and appreciating that experience. Enjoy!

Jack’s Comic Gems: X-Factor Forever

This is a video from my YouTube channel, Jack’s World.

This is video another entry in my ongoing “Jack’s Comic Gems” collection. And for this gem, I highlight a X-Men mini-series that flew under the radar when it came out. Those who follow X-Men comics closely probably know the role Louise Simonson played in developing the franchise with X-Factor in the 1980s. Her run re-established the importance of the Original Five X-Men in the larger Marvel universe.

That same run ended abruptly. But X-Factor Forever gives Louise Simonson a chance to pick up where she left off in a brief, but memorable non-canon story that highlights everything we love about this era of X-Men. Enjoy!

Jack’s Comic Gems: Thanos Wins

This is a video from my YouTube channel, Jack’s World. This is video another addition to my “Jack’s Comic Gems” collection. And this gem is dark, in many ways.

In a story by Donnie Cates, we get a vision of the worst possible scenario for the distant future of the Marvel Universe. In that future, the Mad Titan, Thanos, that has unleashed such fear and dread…wins. But what does it mean for Thanos to finally mean? And what are the larger implications in the past, present, and future of the Marvel universe?

These are heavy questions that help make this gem as compelling as it is dark. Enjoy!

Fallen Friend: The Death Of Ms. Marvel #1 | Reaction, Spoilers, And (Uncanny) Speculation

This is a video from my YouTube channel, Jack’s World. This video is a general reaction to the events of Fallen Friend: The Death of Ms. Marvel #1.

After the incredibly dumb events of Amazing Spider-Man #26, which resulted in the death of Ms. Marvel, this issue deals with the aftermath. And while there are certainly moments worth highlighting, there are also some hints and teases that have me making some distinctly uncanny speculating. Enjoy!

Also, I uploaded this video just a few hours before the news dropped from Entertainment Weekly about Iman Vellani writing “Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant.” So yes, I’m aware it hasn’t aged well already.

Jack’s Comic Gems: Meet The Skrulls

This is another video from my YouTube channel, Jack’s World. This is another addition to my “Jack’s Comic Gems” collection. And this particular gem stands out because it’s a story about the Skrulls and just before the debut of Secret Invasion, no less.

Anybody who has read a lot of Marvel comics know that stories about the Skrulls tend to be predictable, revolving around infiltration and invasion. Meet The Skrulls dares to be something more. It’s not just a story about Skrull agents infiltrating Earth. It’s a story about family. And it’s a story about how that family fights to survive when both humans and even their fellow Skrulls work against them. Enjoy!

Superman Earth One Video: The Most Underrated Man Of Steel

This is another video from my YouTube channel, Jack’s World. This video is me highlighting and celebrating Superman: Earth One, a 2012 graphic novel from DC Comics that gave us a unique version of the Man of Steel. Superman has had many iterations over the years. Some are more memorable than others. But Superman: Earth One gave us something special. As a story and a take on this iconic character, it delivered a Superman that has only gotten better with age. And I break down why in this video. Enjoy!

Jack’s Comic Gems: Cyclops Starstruck

This is another video from my YouTube channel, Jack’s World. This is video another entry in my ongoing “Jack’s Comic Gems” collection. And this particular gem takes Cyclops, one of the most controversial and well-known X-Men characters, and puts him in an unfamiliar setting. He’s not leading the X-Men. He’s not clashing with Wolverine or obsessing over Jean Grey. He’s not even in his adult form thanks to some time travel shenanigans.

Instead, he’s in space re-connecting with his father, Corsair. He’s going on adventures with the Starjammers, channeling his inner space pirate. It’s not your typical Cyclops story, but that’s exactly what made it such a gem. Enjoy!

Jack’s Comic Gems: Terminator Sector War

This is video another entry in my ongoing “Jack’s Comic Gems” collection. And once again, I highlight an underrated mini-series based in the world of the Terminator. While many of the Terminator sequels have faltered since Terminator: Judgement Day, there are still some quality stories out there. And one of them manifests in Terminator Sector War, a true gem of a comic that really gets to the heart of what makes Terminator great. Enjoy!
