The Growing Challenge of “Strong Female Characters”

As I wait for a response on “The Big Game” and begin my next project, I’m immediately confronted by a growing issue. It’s an issue we’re seeing a lot more of these days. Some say it’s from excessive liberal activism. Some say it’s a direct response to Bella Swan. Whatever it is, we can’t escape it. Strong female characters are in demand. People want them. Producers are trying to make them. Nobody has a clue how and sometimes it shows. Just look at the response to this year’s Ghostbusters trailer.

Now I don’t claim to be an expert on third-wave feminism, pop culture criticism, and the workings of gender politics. I also don’t claim that all the female characters in my books are “strong female characters.” I understand that some of the female characters in “Skin Deep” and “The Secrets of Sadfur Island” play into certain tropes. They kind of have to for the story I’m trying to tell. That said, I do make an effort at strong female characters. Jani’s character in “Jackpot” is my latest effort. Not saying it’s perfect, but it is an effort.

With my next project, I’m going to try and make an even greater effort. While one of the main characters in this story is going to be a man, the character that ends up moving the plot forward most is a woman. I decided early on that I want this woman to fit the characteristics of a strong female character. I don’t expect her to fit perfectly, but I want to make the effort.

I’ve already run into some issues. For one, I ended up changing her name once already. Not sure that’s a sign of anything, but if I can’t even come up with a firm name for a character, then I’d say that means the concept needs refinement. I’m also trying to give her a distinct personality. The first scene she’s in is a bit heavy to say the least. Already, I’m concerned that she’s coming off as too harsh and not feminine enough. I don’t want an angry ball-buster type woman. I want a female character that is actually likable and genuine.

This is definitely going to be an ongoing struggle. As The Mary Sue, a feminist pop culture website, points out, strong female characters don’t always come off as strong or as feminine as we think. I want to try and avoid that pitfall. It’s going to be a challenge, but I think it’s one that’s worth taking on. As I said earlier, the demand for strong female characters is growing. It’s going to take a while really get a feel for what defines this concept, but I’m going to try and do my part.

My Next Project: A Sci-Fi Erotic Thriller?

As I wait for a response on “The Big Game,” I’m already hard at work contemplating my next project. It’s a big part of the process I’ve developed over the years. No work is ever truly definitive. You can’t treat a book or series as though it’s your masterpiece and it’s going to make you the next Tolken. You have to be ready and willing to develop more ideas. More importantly, you have to be willing to develop new ideas. That’s what I hope to do with this next project.

Recent projects like “The Big Game” and “Jackpot” focus heavily on romance and erotica. I started these projects with a certain, focused theme in mind and built the story around that. However, lately I’ve felt the need to mix things up a bit. Maybe it’s just a result of having seen one too many summer blockbusters, but I want to add a little excitement to my work. I want to get peoples’ hearts racing for entirely different reasons.

I have written books with that concept before. “Skin Deep” is, at its core, an thriller with heavy erotic elements. It had romance and erotica, but those elements are built around an adventure and a conflict. Granted, it’s not the kind of conflict you’ll see outside of a late-night movie on Cinemax, but it’s a type of conflict I think deserves exploring.

So for my next project, which is currently untitled, I’m going to take a stab at another erotic thriller. Moreover, I want it to be a thriller with some sci-fi elements mixed in with the erotica. It may sound like a strange combination, but make no mistake. There is erotic potential in sci-fi. Just search the web and note all the erotic fan fiction about Captain Kirk and Spock. This project isn’t going to be quite like that, but I will try to use sci-fi elements in a new way.

I think the timing for something like this is right. Not long ago, the market was saturated with romance and erotica surrounding  supernatural creatures like vampires and werewolves. It still is to some extent, but I think the time is right to mix things up. Like every fading trend, it takes something new and innovative to start a new wave. I’m not going to pretend like this next project will be revolutionary, but I hope to make it part of such a trend.

Manuscript Completed: The Big Game

Hope everyone enjoyed my free give-away for “Child of Orcus.” I don’t know if I’ll do another promotion down the line. It depends on how things with my latest project pans out. That project, I’m happy to say, is finally complete! Yes, I have completed yet another book and I’m ready to make it official.

Earlier this spring, I teased (and hopefully tantalized) the theme of my latest book. When I came up with it, I did so with one major theme in mind. I wanted to combine my love of sports with my love of erotica. I feel it’s a potent combination and one that isn’t often explored in this era of vampire lovers and wealthy BDSM enthusiasts. With the baseball season in full swing, the football season just around the corner, and the Olympics almost upon us, I think the time is right for this potent combination to shine. For that reason, I’m proud to announce, “The Big Game.”

Imagine, for a moment, all the pressure and stress that a star athlete must endure. In our culture, we see it all the time. Athletes, some of them teenagers, are burdened with all the hopes and dreams of an entire team, if not an entire community. They get a taste of fame and stardom before they’ve even had a chance to learn how to handle such pressure. It’s a lot to ask of anyone, even an athlete.

Add into the mix the innate attraction to star athletes and the pressure is even greater. It’s no great secret. Athletes attract women. Sometimes, those women go to elaborate lengths to hook up with these athletes and not always for the right reasons. Some aren’t even subtle about it. There are stories everywhere like this one that depict just how much sordid attention an athlete can get.

This is the world that David Daniels finds himself in with, “The Big Game.” He’s the star quarterback of the River Valley Riders in a small Texas town where football is king. It’s not unlike many Texas towns. What we see in “Friday Night Lights” is just a small part of a much larger story. David knows this better than most because he’s got the biggest game of his life coming up, but he’s a total wreck.

Being a star athlete, he knows the kind of attention he gets. He experiences the pressure, the temptation, and the potential pitfalls every day. As such, he struggles to control his world. Being a teenager, that control only goes so far. That struggle only escalates at the big game approaches. His coach senses this and sets him up with someone who can help him, namely his beautiful college-aged daughter, Gloria Gibson. What she teaches him and what he learns about control will have a lasting impact during the big game and beyond.

This is a story I hope appeals to both erotica fans and sports fans. It’s a story that shows a young man learning from a strong older woman what it really means to be in control. What kind of control does this mean? Well some BDSM fans have probably already figured that out. Others will just have to wait and see.

As of now, the book is complete and edited. Before I self-publish it though, I’m going to make a concerted effort to get a publisher on my side. I’ve done this with almost every one of my books, but I’ve yet to receive an offer that followed through. I’m STILL waiting for a response from Crimson Frost. I’m not sure how extensive I’ll be with “The Big Game.” I’m going to focus primarily on smaller erotica publishers and BDSM imprints. Some might be longer shots than others, but I’m going to try. If I don’t get any offers, I’ll self-publish again and try my luck with another book. For now, here’s to hoping that “The Big Game” is a winner.

Last Day for “Child of Orcus” Giveaway

I spent most of my weekend wrapping up the last round of edits for my latest book. As I prepare to send it out to publishers, I want to remind everyone that the 5-day, free-giveaway for my first self-published book, “Child of Orcus,” is almost complete. Today will be the final day of the promotion. After that, it returns to its previous price of $0.99. I know that’s not much, but you just can’t beat giving something away for free.

I don’t know if or when I’ll make another offer like this. As I’ve said before, I’m trying to get a publisher or an agent for my next round of books. I have only a small sliver of hope that Crimson Frost will follow through in publishing “Embers of Eros.” I’m looking into other publishers, large and small, for opportunities to spread my work. I have a lot of material to share. I just don’t have the opportunity to share it yet. I hope that changes soon.

In the meantime, enjoy “Child of Orcus.” I don’t know if or when I’ll do another free giveaway like this. So take advantage of it while you can!

For Five Days Only: “Child of Orcus” is FREE!

41iu2bxcwvul-_sx320_bo1204203200_

As I continue to edit my latest book, I have a special summer offer. For the next five days, my first ever self-published book, “Child of Orcus” will be free. Not discounted. Not in part. Completely and totally free. If you have an Amazon account, you can read it. No cost. No fuss. Completely and utterly free.

Not to sound too much like a bad infomercial, but this is limited. I’ll only be doing this for the next five days. Then, the price goes back to normal again. The price wasn’t much to begin with, but you still can’t beat free, no matter how you slice it.

I feel like I need to grow my audience and I can’t do that even with a discount. I need to be willing to show what I can offer. That means eating up the cost and sharing my work for free. I hope many take advantage of this. I also hope it inspires readers to check out other parts of my work and gets people excited for my next book, which I hope to announce later this month. Until then, let Child of Orcus help enhance your summer.

Embers of Eros Update (Possibly)

I know I’ve been blogging about it for a while now. For quite some time, I’ve been working with Crimson Frost Books to publish my first non-self-published work, “Embers of Eros.” I’ve had few updates on this issue and for good reason. They have not gotten back to me in any capacity since May 2016. Before then, they sent me some paperwork. However, it was paperwork I had already filled out months before. It’s not a good sign to say the least.

Now I don’t know if there are other factors involved. There may be shakeups with the editors or something of that nature. I understand that to some degree, but I’ve had this book pending with them for such a long time now that I’m starting to consider withdrawing it. I may be new to the industry, but it shouldn’t take THIS long to refine a manuscript that they’ve had for over a year now. It’s not like I sent them something on the scale of the last Harry Potter book.

It would be a major step back if I withdrew my manuscript from them. I may end up having to self-publish “Embers of Eros” once more. I’m hoping to avoid that because I don’t think I’ll build an audience that way. I’ll start feeling around for other small publishers, but I’m really starting to lose faith in Crimson Frost.

10 Crazy One-Night Stand Experiences

There’s a time and a place to celebrate love. Many of my books have strong romantic themes. Skin Deep, Child of Orcus, and The Escort and the Gigolo are each built around romance . That said, there is a time where romance takes a back seat to the down and dirty world of erotica. I’ve explored that too in my writing. Jackpot and The Final Communion are basically built around casual, but meaningful erotic encounters. Both themes can make for strong stories. That’s exactly what I hope to explore in future books.

That said, there are places other than fiction where these elements play out. As if often the case, real life tends to inspire the best stories. So thanks to the Richest, here’s a list of crazy one-night stands. Enjoy!

New Book Complete!

It took a little longer than I had hoped, but I can finally say it. I have completed the first draft of my next book! I did it just in time for the 4th of July holiday no less. Given the content and subject matter of this book, I’d say that’s more than appropriate. Why? You’ll just have to read to find out.

Now comes the biggest challenge, which is revising. This is the part of the writing process that tends to reveal just how well I’ve thought things through. There are times when I’m re-reading a manuscript where I want to bang my head against the wall. It’s amazing what seems like a good idea at the time, but is actually really fucked up when seen with a fresh set of eyes. That’s why it’s so important to catch these things before submitting to a publisher. I never assume that I get everything right the first go around. It’s never wise to assume you’re that good.

I always intended this story to be fairly brief, but concise. It has a very specific theme to it and I didn’t want to get too elaborate this time around. I want to save those elaborate ideas for when I have an audience, however long that might take. I’ve got a long road ahead of me, but I hope this book will mark another step in that journey.

The Importance of Afterglow

As I’m finishing up my latest book, I find myself reflecting on an underappreciated element of romance and erotica. In most narratives that involve two people coming together, either romantically or sexually, the steps leading to that moment  get the most attention. However, the moments after tend to be just as revealing, if not more so.

Think about it from the perspective of having just seen an awesome concert, gone on an awesome roller coaster, or seen your new favorite movie for the first time. The experience that comes right afterwards can be just as meaningful as the experience itself. It’s a profound moment, of sorts, when we wrap our brains around what just happened. All the thoughts, emotions, and perceptions that go along with that experience change us. Those changes help give impact to the experience as a whole.

For the story I’m writing now, I’m putting extra emphasis on the impact that the story will have on one particular character. It’s an impact that, in some respects, needs to happen for some people. We all go through our lives and experience turning points in our lives. These moments force us to reassess our understanding of our world. We see the world in a new light. We think about things in a new way.

This impact is important because our brains just aren’t wired to reassess and rethink our experiences. It’s natural to become content with the way things are and oppose any inclination to change it. That’s why it often takes something jarring, shocking, or overwhelming to change our perceptions. Romance and erotica will do that to someone in any number of ways. Some are good. Some are bad. Some exist in that vast gray area in between.

With the story I’m telling, I like to think there’s more emphasis on the good. However, I don’t intend to ignore those gray areas either. There’s something to be said about experiences that affect us so significantly. It’s a powerful feeling that can affect us for years to come. I hope to capture that feeling with this story.
